Equipment Shootout 1 →
Alright audio nerds…..I’m starting a series of equipment shootouts over the next few weeks, the goal being a smartening of my workflow and perhaps an upping of the fi. So, let’s start with a simple one. Here’s a verse and chorus of a song printed through 3 different SSL clone stereo buss limiters. Rate them in order of preference...
Dipping my big toe in to a second batch of songs with The Drowning Men. This will complete the much anticipated LP for their new label, Borstal Beat. My pal Billy Mohler producing.

Knee-deep in rock with Tony Hoffer and The Temper Trap (@thetempertrap) for several weeks here in LA. Most excellent….
With the Matt & The Mainstream record knocked out of the park and quickly mastered by my old pal Gavin Lurssen, getting underway mixing the debut album for my new favorite unsigned band Chasing Kings. Quite a week this one.

Stoked….spending the next couple weeks in the new studio, kicking out a couple indie mixes. Gear Highlights include a new ProTools Native System running on an 8 Core Mac Pro that is blowing my mind, some new UAD plugs including the Studer A800 Emulation (which I am embarrassed to admit brings a grin from ear to ear), and a recently invigorated set of Ampex 601 Electronics that is just the...

Heading back in to the cave for a handful of weeks with Tony Hoffer and The Coronas.
From their wikipedia page: The Coronas are a Meteor Award–winning Irish four-piece Rock-Indie-Alternative band from Terenure, Dublin, Ireland. They have released two studio albums, Heroes or Ghosts (2007) and Tony Was An Ex-Con (2009). The first album contained hits such as Grace, Don’t Wait, Heroes or...

I’ve been thinking.
If I could do it all over again, I’d definitely go back and be the drummer for Mott The Hoople.
Here we go! Lex Land’s new album “Were My Sweetheart to Go…” is live today at http://www.lexland.net . Please check it out and share! Recorded and Mixed by yours truly.

Settling in to Sound Factory this week with Tony Hoffer and this great English band called Various Cruelties. This stain probably won’t come out.
End Of An Era
Down she comes…..wow.
After nearly 8 years of working out of my little backyard studio, affectionately coined OHM, it’s time to move on. The house is selling and I’m heading a bit inland to the base of the San Gabriels…suburbia…SO stoked.
The idea of rebuilding this room is pretty daunting. It takes a long time to learn the nuances of a listening environment, the...
The World's Greatest Home-Made Margarita Recipe
I’ve been working on this a while and feel it’s finally time to go public. Here it is: The World’s Greatest Home-Made Margarita…in all its simplistic glory.
In a shaker, add the following:
3oz Tequila. I like a Reposado like Patron or Cazadores. Fancier, more expensive tequilas can be a bit too gentle and kind.
1oz Gran Marnier
3oz Lime Juice. Newman’s Own brand...
Today in Rock:
Up to the elbow in a new mess of songs from singer/songwriter Ryan Darton. This is going to be good…real good.

Here’s an interesting way to think about the whole indie vs major label concept. I’d certainly not suggest anyone take this as absolute truth, but it’s an interesting read. Enjoy.

Alright kids, this service is about to go out of their free beta stage and start charging. Cloud-based backup of ProTools sessions and the ability to share/collaborate online. It’s a great idea and gets better everyday. For those of us trying to share large sessions, it’s a real gem. Thank me later.
I’m going to give tumblr a try. I’ve been fussing around with my website for years…wasting a lot of time and energy. But look, I make records. All anyone wants to see is a discography and maybe a few photos. This might be perfect. (gasp)
